SOME EXITING IDEAS FOR SEPTEMBER

16/04/2019 by Dick 3 Comments

In our recent Newsletter I asked you all to think of some ideas for a meet in September as we have not yet booked a hut and I am not personally able to commit to a date in September. So far I have received two very different and interesting ideas. Firstly Ian suggested a CIC Hut trip to do some of the classic rock climbs on the Ben. (Probably a weekend or a bit more). Secondly Shirley mentioned a trip to a Hostel in Wooler which should give access to some fantastic hill country, mountain biking, costal walks and some outcrop climbing. (Probably a weekend but there should be no difficulty in adding a bit more.)

It is looking like we will have some choice of dates, so if you are keen, please give any relevant dates that you are available Please post here, email, ring or just talk to me if you are interested in either or both of these ideas. Other ideas for September or for any other time are most welcome. I would hope to be able to write up one or more of these as proposed trips for the committee to consider in early May. So ideas and expressions of interest to me by end of April please.

P.S. I am hoping that at the last minute commitments will let me come on one or both of the trips mentioned so far.”

Littondale walk meet report

14/04/2019 by Andy Hudson Leave a Comment

A bright and breezy day greeted six of us on our latest club walk from Halton Gill  up Pen-y-Ghent and Plover. Having dutifully filled in our emergency contact details and popped them in the top of our rucksacks ( well remembered team!) we set off on our quiet walk up Dawson Close with only the snowy white ponies watching our procession. Beautiful views of Littondale and the flanks of Pen-y-Ghent abounded. The usual crowds were encountered on the final scramble up Pen-y-Ghent but quickly left behind as we ambled over the slopes of Plover.

The Strava app put a slight pressure on yours truly, but the old piece of string worked a treat and despite rumours about the old Burnett mileage system it came in at 12.6 miles (phew!!!)

😜

Never doubted it! Anyway thanks to all for the great banter ( I still don’t know the life span of a frog??!!) and for coming along a good day had by all.

The next walk is Chris’s Thursday walk Whernside and it’s Tarns on the 9th May followed by a  Howgills special on Saturday 11th May. (I appreciate the walks have been close together date wise and in the future we will work on spreading them out a bit better if possible. ) The coming week will see a meet in Arran where walking, cycling, and climbing will be on the agenda. Smashing

So all that remains is again to ask anyone wishing to coordinate a walking meet please contact me as I would be grateful for your help.

Saturday 12th January – Great Whernside Walk via Providence Pot

15/01/2019 by Dick Leave a Comment

What a sociable walk led by Paul Shoesmith. A total of twelve of us (friends old and new) enjoyed a brisk walk up Great Whernside from Kettlewell via Providence Pot.
A good day out with occasional views and top quality gossip. We were able to feel it was a serious walk during the hour or so along the summit ridge with 40mph drizzle. A group huddle at a shelter in a pile of stones for lunch felt really cold and windy until we went out of the shelter and found what cold and windy actually feels like.
After crossing the road above Park Rash we contoured round to Top Mere then a quick 2 mile descent to the café in Kettlewell.
