Doug Scott Lecture Wed 5th Oct, Colne
Legendary climber, Doug Scott, is returning to the area with a new lecture – and aims to help the people of remote valleys in Nepal.
John Heald has asked me to let you all know about a lecture being held on 5th October in Colne. It sounds like it could be a great talk and is in aid of a worthwhile cause.
His latest lecture ‘Everest the Hard Way’ tells the incredible story of the 1975 expedition when Scott and Dougal Haston completed the first assent of Everest’s massive South West Face, and he became the first Briton to stand on the summit of the highest mountain in the world.
In his lecture Doug not only describes the climb, but how his life led up to this defining moment, and the climbers such as Chris Bonington, Paul Braithwaite, Nick Escourt and Don Whillans, who made the climb possible.
Twenty years ago Scott launched a charity, Community Action Nepal, to give back to the families of Sherpas who helped during his climbs. The charity built schools and medical centres in remote areas, but the huge earthquake that struck Nepal in April 2015 cost many lives and destroyed many of the buildings. Now the charity is working to help rebuild the shattered communities.
“The people of Skipton and the Dales have been great supporters of the charity and I am sure they will find this latest lecture interesting. I will also be giving an up date on the work that is taking place in Nepal – and every penny raised will go towards that work,” Doug said.

Bamford Edge Meet Report
Four of us had a great days climbing at this crag which is not often frequented by the club. Starting in the Neb Buttress area Stephen G and I started on the short curve (Vdiff) whilst Steve W and Andy M started on Bamford Wall(Severe) which was repeated by Stephen G and myself before we tackled the aptly named Reach(VS). The crag was getting quite busy so we headed off towards the great Tor area where Recess Crack(VDiff), Browns Crack(HS), Kelly(Severe) and possibility(Severe) were all tackled.

All in all it was a grand days climbing at a crag which needs another visit.
Ilkley Meet Report
Well, I’m sure anyone based in the U.K. can guess what happened to us last night!
We rocked up at the quarry to find a slack line up and a bunch of kids top roping the easier routes so we tootled off to Rocky Valley….
The climbing was good, Steve and I made a cracking attempt on Flake Climb (S) and 3 Slab route was climbed a few times. Tim and Brian found a classic gritstone chimney to play in and we were a happy bunch of 8 climbers…… then I checked my phone and found some messages from a worried hubby checking we were ok??? What was he on about the weather was humid but lovely…… then we started seeing flashes of lightening in the distance.
The rest I will let you imagine but I guarantee…. it was worse!
But we all got down safe, had a beer and we all managed at least one route so happy days, all good fun 😀
