And who would have believed it was still only February and that T shirts would be the official attire as five of us, ranging from craggy old timers to young and enthusiastic first timers tackled a wide variety of routes which included, Skeleton Scoop(HVD *); Evening Star(S***); Priority Corner(S*); Sickle Direct(VS***); Fretsaw(HVD*); Priority(VS**) and more. Horton Bike Ride Report

25/02/2019 by Andy Barton Leave a Comment

A merry group of 7 (Shirley, Fiona,  John W, Chris H, Paul F, Anthony and myself) met for this unseasonably warm bike ride from Horton. Our route took us on The Pennine Way out to Birkwith Moor through Cam Woodlands and a lovely descent to Beckermonds.

Alas what goes down eventually goes up and so it did after Oughtershaw with the ascent of Fleet Moss, Just prior to us beginning the ascent Chris H and his E bike were seen (for the last time by us as he continued on)  making light work of the ascent. The rest of us Just got on with the job in hand of the ascent and eventually made it to the top with a bit left in the tank and with me  realizing I either needed a) a new saddle or b) better padding in derriere region which at the time felt like 2 raw steaks, a comparison I suggest you don’t dwell on.

A slight descent towards Hawes and we turned off onto the Pennine Bridleway and found some shelter from the wind for lunch. Once refuelled we continued along the Pennine Bridleway and a delightful descent took us to Ling Gill and onto  High Birkwith before the last roller coaster minor road back to Horton. Thanks to Shirley and John for organising this meet.

Ingleborough Walk meet report

03/02/2019 by Andy Barton Leave a Comment

Five of us enjoyed a wintry walk up Ingleborough, We were blessed with cold clear conditions and headed up through a rather Icy Trow Gill.

Once out of Trow Gill we emerged into the sunshine and snow as we headed over to Gaping Gill and gradually up stopping briefly for spikes/crampon fitting and onto Ingleborough which by the time we reached the top was a little misty but not without a view.

It was not a long thought process to decide whether to have lunch at the top in at best “nithering conditions” or head down for shelter so we headed for calmer conditions and lunch. Once refuelled we headed down and back via Long Scar and Long lane and back into Clapham. A grand day out and just a reminder that we are always looking for members to lead a walking meet.
