Overview - Walking Meet:
The Walk is about 11.8 miles long and apart from one steep section is mostly fairly easy walking with about 1500ft of ascent and descent in all.
Route:
The walk starts from the middle of Thixendale village where there is usually plenty of space for roadside parking.
We start by walking out of Thixendale village in a north westerly direction but soon turn off to the left to walk westwards along the Chalkland Way, very gradually gaining height in as we make our way along the valley, until we reach what was a Roman road running along the Western edge of the Wolds.
After a few hundred metres walking south on this road we turn right to take the footpath leading downhill in the direction of Woodley Farm. On a clear day there are great views across the Vale of York from this path, with various Yorkshire land marks such as York Minster and the golf balls on Blubberhouses Moor being visible.
At the bottom of the hill we take a left and walk roughly south until we reach a road named “Uncleby Hill”. After a very short distance walking uphill on this road we take the footpath towards Kirby Underdale, which passes through the through the churchyard of all Saints Church. This is a historic Norman Church and if there is not a service taking place it is worth taking a few moments to have a look inside.
From Kirby Underdale we take the track south which climbs up to Garrowby Hill Top. At the top we cross the A166 and walk a short distance down the road towards Bishop Wilton, before turning off to take the footpath along the top of Worsen Dale. After little while this path turns left to head eastwards uphill; we cross Beacon Road and continue into Deep Dale, the path losing height before making a steep climb onto the other side of the valley. From there we follow footpaths and another short section of the Roman road to reach the Wayrham Picnic Site.
From the Wayrham Picnic site we cross the A166 again and make our way back to Thixendale along the winding Wayrham Dale and Thixendale valleys.
Refreshments afterwards at The Wolds Inn in Huggate - www.woldsinn.com
Please note that the route may be varied on the day subject to the prevailing weather conditions.
