We shall be taking advantage of the good people of the Bradford Pothole Club and using their public chair winch into Gaping Gill, the largest known cavern in the UK!
For those of you who may be unaware this is a yearly occurrence and is very well orchestrated by the BPC team. The hard work and effort they put in allows mere mortals to access this unbelievable cavern via a 98 metre seated winch. Once in the cave you are then free to explore (to an extent) and the BPC even provide some lighting inside although taking an additional light source is of course recommended.
I suggest we meet early at the National Trust car park in Clapham at roughly 8:30 to arrive at the cave mouth by 10am at the latest. The reason for this being it's a public event and you are not able to pre-book tickets. So its important we get there as early as possible to avoid disappointment. That being said I do understand that this is an early start so am happy to work with the group if you would prefer to take our chances with a later start? The BPC run a ticketing system for people arriving at the cave and depending on how busy it is you then wait for your number to be called before being winched in.
There are two options for the walk in. We either use the payed Clapham Nature Trail (£2.50 for Adults) or go round it using the public footpaths linking back up with the main trail a Trow Gill as we did on the Christmas Walk for those of you that came along to that. I'm easy either way and happy if we want to make a decision on the day.
The price for the winch is £15 per person to be paid at the cave in CASH ONLY.
I've attached the BPCs Important Info sheet and would ask that if you want to come along that you give this a good read before hand.
I'll also be sending some info out to you all via email.
Feel free to invite family and friends along (no pets on this one), but due to issues with group sizes it's really important that you let me know if you would like to come along so that I can manage this. So please get in touch using my contact details below.
This event will be weather dependent and please dress for wet windy weather (standard summer!) just in case.
After we've all been successfully winched back out there is of course the option to gather at the New Inn for a drink and some food if required, but I won't book us a table for this one as it will be impossible to know in advance when we'll be back.
You can find lots more detailed info here and on the attached (Gaping Gill Winch - May Bank Holiday - Bradford Pothole Club (bpc-cave.org.uk))
