Location: Meet at 10.00AM outside of Ullswater Information Centre in Beckside Car Park (Pay & Display), Glenridding (Axe & crampons required).
Walking Route: About 12.5k (7.8 miles) & 875m (2,870ft) of ascent. (About 5-6hrs).
Note: Please take appropriate footwear and waterproofs for the weather forecast along with a packed lunch.
The Horseshoe route from Glenridding up one ridge to the summit of Helvellyn and down the other is one of the classic Lake District walks. Striding Edge is a Grade 1 scramble and in winter the route can be a serious undertaking, in particular the exit from Striding Edge to the summit and the subsequent descent to Swirral Edge - the latter when covered in snow and ice can become a convex slope that’s difficult to descend.
Due to the potential for ice and snow, crampons and ice axe are required, with the use of a climbing helmet strongly recommended on the edges. Initially this was to be a winter skills day, however due to the current lean conditions skills training will be limited.
