Settle Circular

11th January 2020 by fiona burnett Leave a Comment

The first walk of the New Year saw the club above Settle on an eleven mile wander in the stunning Limestone area of Warrendale Knotts also more commonly known as Attermire.

The clubs Walking What’s app group had been busy the night before debating the horrendous forecast but six of us persevered and were rewarded with a dry if some what overcast day until half a mile before the end of the walk.

Chris and Anne knew of a good cake shop at the end so after a yummy blueberry and coconut cake followed by a large mug of tea we were happily recompensed for getting slightly damp.

Thanks to all for their company. As always an enjoyable day.

The next walk is Thursday 23rd January Rylstone to Grassington. Before the photo competition!!! So if you haven’t sent those pictures to John yet nows your opportunity.

Langdale and Selside.

14th November 2019 by fiona burnett 1 Comment

Great Langdale from Lingmoor Fell

Another smashing weekend in the the Lakes from the Little Langdale Hut gave us some superb walking straight from the door.

Blea Tarn

A veggie communal meal on the Saturday night was enjoyed by all, really yummy, so many thanks Dick for sorting and with John’s photo competition on the horizon there was lots of potential to get that winning shot with such stunning weather to be had.

Ribblehead Viaduct from Park Fell.

If that wasn’t enough walking from Selside was a bonus later in the week.

The next walk is a local walk up Simons Seat on Saturday 23rd November, followed by a walk from the Christmas Hut Meet in the Lakes at Stair. So come along to both if you get the chance and get clicking those pictures.

Fairfield Horseshoe?

29th September 2019 by fiona burnett Leave a Comment

Having got soaked well and truly earlier in the week on a promising forecast of light rain showers and sunny spells I was slightly hesitant in setting off on a heavy showers and breezy weather outlook. Thankfully Shirley and Martin had the same thought so undeterred we decided to switch to plan B and meet for a walk in the Dales instead.

Saturday morning dawned heavy rain bouncing down outside as it had done for most of the night. Oh dear! but plans are plans so throwing everything into my new plastic rucksack liner especially resourced for such an occasion I debated seriously wether to gear up in the garage before heading out.

As I drove up out of Settle over the Moor (a delightful ride on most occasions) a faint glimmer of bright light could be seen encroaching over the sodden landscape from the west. Arriving at Airton to meet the others a total transformation started to occur hard to believe but blue skies and sunshine started to break through. So off we set over to Calton, Winterburn Reservoir, Hanlith Moor, Kirkby Malham ( by this time in tee shirts wishing we had shorts on!) and back to Airton. Great views, good company, nice chocolate tiffin ( thanks Shirley) 11.5 miles no rain, no jacket fab.

Northern Howgills

24th August 2019 by fiona burnett Leave a Comment

A well earned stop away from the crowds.

The latest walking exploit on the clubs programme found us in the less frequented part of the Howgills around Bowderdale and Weasdale. It proved to be a perfect escape from the crowds on a beautiful Bank Holiday weekend with new ground to explore and enjoy. Ascending via Hooksey and Randygill Top we could see for miles. The M6 could be seen in the far distance as we descended over Hazelgill Knott and a debate on the history of the M6 proved informative!! Honestly as an old dinosaur there are times when google on the hills certainly has its plus points!! Anyway a lot has changed since 1970 is all I can say giving us the opportunity to do the odd Munro or Corbett in a 4/5 hours drive or less!! So thanks for the company and chatter a good day had by all.

Fountains Fell

27th June 2019 by fiona burnett Leave a Comment

Fountains Fell was the third midweek walk on the clubs programme this week. Parking up by Malham Tarn the day showed great promise as blue sky could be seen making its way in from the west. Following the Pennine Way several groups of Duke of Edinburgh participants were encountered, all in high spirits shouldering huge rucksacks their enthusiasm was uplifting and a great credit to them all. Gaining the summit after a yummy piece of fruit cake, (always a good thing to give the coordinator!!! Smashing) the clouds finally parted and we were rewarded not only with a good old view but murmurations of Starlings in great flocks swirling and diving an amazing sight to witness. Following the ridge down we had the place to ourselves and a new path recently discovered by yours truly saw us coming down right on cue to the boardwalk around the tarn. Having reconnoitred the walk earlier in the week I was keen to see if I could see anymore Roe Dear, Newts, Woodpeckers etc but the day was later than my earlier visit and despite our best efforts nothing could be spied. Non the less it was a varied walk with a variety of terrain and people met it certainly made for an enjoyable day thanks to all concerned.
